Tropical Storms
Tropical storms are organized systems of clouds and thunderstorms that occur over warm tropical oceans and are characterized by a defined circulation pattern. They are classified in intensity on a scale from tropical depression (with maximum sustained winds of less than 39 mph) to tropical storm (with maximum sustained winds of 39 to 73 mph). Tropical storms typically develop from a disturbance, such as a tropical wave, and can strengthen into hurricanes if conditions are favorable, including warm ocean temperatures and low wind shear. They can produce heavy rainfall, strong winds, and potentially devastating impacts on coastal areas, including flooding and storm surges. Tropical storms are monitored by meteorological organizations due to their potential to cause severe weather and hazards.
